WAITOMO - A CONTEXT FOR LEARNING
|
The Education Service will tailor a programme, including related lessons and resources, to meet the specific objectives and needs of your group. Please contact the Education Service for further information.
The Waitomo Caves region is one of the most unique areas of New Zealand. Nowhere else can you easily see rare and endangered animals, go caving, or do adventure activities at such economical prices. There are so many possibilities when it comes to linking LEOTC activities in this area with the New Zealand Curriculum. Here are just some examples:- The Living World - study cave creatures like glowworms and cave weta, moa skeletons and rare fossils at the Waitomo Caves Discovery Centre, or view rare and endangered kiwi, tuatara, falcon and other native fauna at the Otorohanga Kiwi House. Senior Geography / Planet Earth & Beyond - take a guided tour of The Waitomo Glowworm Cave or the beautiful Ruakuri Cave for an in-depth look at the world below us. Then visit the Waitomo Caves Discovery Centre to learn more about caves, karst, speleothems and the interaction between the water, CO2 and limestone in this environment. We can even arrange a visit to McDonalds Limeworks to view how limestone is impacted on and used by humans. Social Sciences - study the effects of Tourism in Waitomo, visit primary and secondary attractions and investigate current trends. This region once played a pivotal role in New Zealand's history. Stay at one of our many marae as your base to visit historic sites, explore the Rohe Potae, Opapaka Pa or view taonga at the Waitomo Caves Discovery Centre, and never forget that Otorohanga is New Zealand's Kiwiana Capital. Health and Physical Education - Go adventure caving with The Legendary Black Water Rafting Co. or try abseiling, team building exercises, and caving on Stubbs Farm. There's indoor rockclimbing at Harvest Rock Indoor Climbing Wall, or for something more sedate try bushwalking through the karst landscape of an old cave system at Ruakuri Reserve.
Call or send us an email to make a booking. Or just get in touch to find out how we can link your Y1 to Y13 classroom programme to the many options available in this area.
